SUSTAINABLE AQUAFEEDS FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM


June 1st 2008 – Sunday – 14:00 to 17:45 h

At the workshop, keynote speakers will try to shed some light on the challenges to produce sustainable aquafeeds in the third millennium. The idea is also to discuss the current Brazil perspective of raising carnivore marine fish considering the current challenges faced worldwide of ingredient shortage and environment sustainability. Invited speakers

Dr. Vinícius R. Cerqueira- Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Dr. Cerqueira holds a BSc. Degree in Oceanography (1981) from the Federal University of Rio Grande, Brazil and a MSc. (Diplome d'Etudes Aprofondies, 1983) and Dr. (1986) Degrees in Oceanography, both from the Université D’Aix Marseille, France. Currently, Dr. Cerqueira is a titular professor of Marine Finfish Aquaculture at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. His research interests are finfish reproduction and juvenile growth-out technology. The Brazilian snooks (Centropomus parallelus and Centropomus undecimalis) the European sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and the lutjanids (Lutjanus griseus and Lutjanus analis) are among the species investigated by Dr. Cerqueira. At the XIII ISFNF workshop, Dr. Cerqueira will be presenting a talk entitled: “Brazilian potential for marine aquaculture”.


MSc. Eric Routledge- Special Secretary for Aquaculture and Fisheries, Brazil

Mr. Routledge holds a BSc. Degree in Biology (1994) form Universidade Santa Úrsula, Brazil and a MSc. Degree in Aquaculture (1999) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Currently, he is the General Coordinator for Research Support and Generation of New Technology from the Special Secretariat for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Secretaria Especial de Aqüicultura e Pesca – SEAP). This Secretariat is attached to the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil, and is the main authority for the management and development of fisheries and aquaculture in Brazil. It assists the President in the drafting of policies and guidelines, promotes actions aiming at the construction of infrastructure for the development of fisheries, aquaculture and fish products trade, and implements programmes for the rational development of aquaculture, in cooperation with the Federal District, States and Municipal Authorities. SEAP is also responsible for the upkeep of the General Fisheries Register (Registro Geral da Pesca – RGP), the granting of licences, permits and authorizations for fisheries and aquaculture. At the XIII ISFNF workshop, Mr. Routledge will be presenting a talk entitled: “Brazilian government guidelines for marine fish aquaculture”.


Dr. Karl D. Shearer- Aquaculture Protein Center, Norway

Dr. Shearer holds a BSc. (1970) and MSc. (1987) Degrees from the University of Washington College of Fisheries, United States of America, and a PhD Degree in Fisheries and Marine Biology (1991) from the University of Bergen, Norway. He is currently employed at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences at Aas, Norway. Dr. Shearer is attached to the Aquaculture Protein Center, a Norwegian Center of Excellence, where he is responsible for providing technical advise on an industry-sponsored project to harvest and process Antarctic krill for development of products for aquaculture and human nutrition. Dr. Shearer spent most of the 1970's in Australia, initially working on game fish and later as the Officer in Charge of the Inland Fisheries Research station, in New South Wales. He was instrumental in developing methods for the induced spawning and large scale production of native Australian freshwater fishes. In 1980 he managed the saltwater site at what was the worlds largest salmon farm. From 1980-2007 he was at NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service conducting research in fish nutrition. During this period he received fellowships from the Japanese and Norwegian governments to conduct collaborative research in their countries. His research interests are, bioenergetics, experimental design, sustainable utilization of natural resources. At the XIII ISFNF workshop, Dr. Shearer will be presenting a talk entitled: “Aquaculture sustainability and human impact on global nutrient cycles”.


Dr. Albert G.J. Tacon- Aquatic Farm Ltd, United States of America

Dr. Tacon holds a BSc. Degree in Botany and Zoology (1973) from Westfield College, University of London, United Kingdown, and a PhD Degree (1978) from University College (Cardiff), University of Wales, United kingdown. He is, currently, Technical Director of Aquatic Farms Ltd in Hawaii, United States of America. Dr. Tacon has over 30 years of research, training and field experience in aquaculture nutrition and feed technology, including 14 years of employment and work experience with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) within national, regional and interregional aquaculture development projects. Dr Tacon has over 41 in-country work experiences with FAO and other agencies in aquaculture/nutrition/aquafeed development, and over 193 publications on aquaculture, including publications on food security and poverty alleviation, aquaculture nutrition and feeding, and FAO training manuals. He is an Affiliate Research Faculty at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Affiliate Professor of Aquaculture at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He also currently serves as Scientific Advisor on Aquatic Resources to the International Foundation for Science, Stockholm, Sweden (since 1998), is Editor of International Aquafeed, Editor-in-Chief of Review in Aquaculture and on the editorial board of Aquaculture Nutrition and Aquaculture Research. At the XIII ISFNF workshop, Dr. Tacon will be presenting a talk entitled: “Challenges to produce sustainable aquafeeds for the third millennium”.

 

Panelists

Dr. Trond Storebakken- Aquaculture Protein Center, Norway

With more than 20 years of experience on fish nutrition research in Nofma Marine (previously Akvaforsk), and more than 110 per-reviewed papers in feeding, pigmentation, ingredients and aquafeed processing, Dr. Storebakken is currently the Director of the Aquaculture Protein Centre, Norwegian Centre of Excellence, Norway. He is also a Professor of Feed Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and visiting Professor at Zhejiang Ocean University, China.


MSc. Tryve Berg Lea- Skretting, Norway

Mr. Lea has a vast experience in the Aquafeed Industry. Working within Skretting, he has been a member of Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue, lead by WWF, and the leader of the `Skretting´s Sustainable Team`. Currently, Mr. Lea holds a position as International Product Manager at Skretting, Norway.


MSc. João Manoel C. Alves- Guabi Nutrição Animal, Brazil

Mr. Alves works as Aquaculture Product Manager for Guabi Nutrição Animal, Brazil. Guabi is one of the main fish feed manufacturers in Brazil.
